[Blog] Long Run is Long

By in

In poker, and life in general, you have to think big in order to move forward. Come and read the wise words of our lifestyle coach João Vieira.

Long Run is Long

One of the most common expressions we hear poker pros use when commenting on a specific play is “It will work in the long run.” This play may not have worked in this specific situation, but it will work enough times to make us win money if we keep repeating this action when faced with this problem. When we put these words together, we reinforce that even though the outcome wasn’t good today, repeating this play is the way to go. We are reinforcing our path, not our outcome.

Understanding the very simple concept that not all good decisions will turn into positive outcomes, and that bad decisions sometimes will turn into good outcomes, is incredibly important in order to understand poker. Understanding how variance works can also be extremely useful in other aspects of our lives.

How many of us have decided to change good things in our strategy because we lost confidence during a phase of bad variance? How many of us have started questioning everything we do at the tables just because we´re losing for a while? How many of us have repeated mistakes for years, and only noticed them when we faced a negative stretch? How many of us have relaxed way too much because we were winning constantly? Just trust the path you chose, the knowledge you learned, and trust the process.

And in our day-to-day lives, how many of us have decided to change what we do, how we act or how we deal with people based on negative outcomes? I believe being kind is the way, even though there will always be someone to take advantage of this – but there will also be many others who will just appreciate you and return the kindness. Being truthful is the way to be, even though there will always be a scammer out there. Just be faithful to who you are, and act the way you deeply think is the most correct. Commit to the person you are and chose to be.

One thing that people who never played this game will have a harder time understanding is that sometimes, good decisions will have bad outcomes. It won’t work, but the decision was correct. And you should keep making that decision. The decision to open that business was probably a good one, but circumstances were negative and it didn’t work out this time. This doesn’t mean it won’t work next time, or the time after that. Just be faithful to your dreams and commit to them. Commit to the path you chose.

One of the main qualities I see in successful people, whether it be poker players or not, is a certain stubbornness. I´m not talking about those who fell into amazing circumstances and things just worked out perfectly; they don’t know much. I´m talking about those who achieved success through gritty, hard and persistent work. They just keep on going. They chose a path, they set a goal, and they committed. They commit to get there, regardless of the sacrifices that it may imply. They´re committed to their path.

I have learned, thanks to a savvy hip-hop verse, that “without struggle there is no progress”. I´ve learned to enjoy the hard days. I learned to appreciate obstacles and enjoy them just as much as blessings – because the first ones are the ones that will help you grow. The biggest test the “Greats” achieved was the test of time. Don´t get impatient. Don’t get discouraged. Commit to your path, and enjoy the ride.

Never forget, the long run is long. And just because it’s delayed, doesn’t mean it’s denied.
